The Future of Assessment in Illinois: A LUDA Proposal

LUDA has presented recommendations to the ISBE board regarding changes to the state assessment system.

The Large Unit District Association strongly recommends that state accountability testing be separated completely from large-scale interim testing that occurs during the school year. LUDA urges ISBE to reject “through-year” test designs that remove the boundary between high-stakes accountability tests and interim assessments.

LUDA strongly believes in the utility of high-quality formative assessments that help teachers improve teaching and learning. Large-scale interim tests can help support that work but have a fundamentally different purpose than accountability testing. For this reason, interim tests need to be locally selected and should not be compromised by linking them directly to high-stakes accountability.
